Unfortunately, the COVID pandemic put a halt on our current study, which was collecting data via face-to-face cognitive interviews. A study and IRB adjustment to allow us to collect this data over Zoom is underway. Preliminary data from the cognitive interviews conducted this year suggests that the RPP FPAQ can be interpreted by a majority of low-income individuals, although some survey respondents may need additional instructions when a retrospective test is administered.
Palmer-Keenan , initiated cognitive interviews EFNEP participants to inform development of the RPP FPAQ to:1 see if the concept of asking questions retrospectively was understandable to our low-income, low-literacy population; and 2 if a side-by-side or separate-page formatting of RPP would be most understandable to the same population. Six cognitive interviews were conducted face-to-face before the COVID shutdown began and the study was postponed.
Currently, an IRB amendment to change the in-person interviews to online data collection e. Preliminary data from the 6 completed cognitive interviews suggest that the RPP FPAQ is understandable to most participants although some participants may require extra instruction.
There was a mix of preference for the two different formats of RPP questions appearing side-by-side versus on separate-pages. Four of the participants preferred the side-by-side format, and two of the participants preferred the separate-page format. There were no discernable differences in understanding between the two formats.
A second doctoral trainee, Qing Chen, was brought onto this project. Qing will be using this data for her doctoral dissertation, and she has developed the draft of the dissertation proposal. Training for data collection and analysis has been provided to two doctoral students, Cheng Li and Geb Bastian. Training regarding the development of manuscripts and abstracts for professional publications was provided to 2 graduate students and 1 undergraduate student. Aim 2 of the project will be addressed. Two retrospective pretest-posttest RPP versions of the FPAQ will be developed for testing: one that is formatted so corresponding pretest and posttest questions are side-by-side Survey A , and one that is formatted so the entire pretest comes before the entire posttest Survey B.
In the first round of testing, participants will have the surveys read to them by researchers, and will be asked to interpret the questions and to think aloud as they answer each question. Participants will be probed to assess whether or not they understand the temporality of the pre- and posttest questions on each survey. Then, participants will be asked which survey is easier to understand and why. This qualitative data will be audio-recorded and content analyzed by Rutgers researchers.
Surveys will then be revised for further cognitive testing rounds, with the final goal to have one final survey for further response shift bias testing. They also completed self-reported physical activity logs. Results ranged from Panel: Baker S.

For the beginning of this project, researchers modified physical activity questions that had been previously developed, and subjected them to expert review. After modification, several rounds of cognitive interviews were conducted until the questions were able to be read and understood by the participants. Physical activity, which has consistently shown in the literature to contribute to weight maintenance and obesity prevention, is listed as one of the EFNEP national priorities along with diet quality and included in current EFNEP education offerings.
However, physical activityand some nutrition constructswerenot included in the evaluation tools used to measure program impact resulting from EFNEP classes. Physical activity assessment will be the major focus of this study; however, some effort will be applied to assisting others working on this multi-state project in the area of nutrition. Potential survey questions will be modified based on prior developed questions, recommendations from the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the American Heart Association, along with Physical Activity Guidelines Modified questions will be reviewed by a panel of experts consist of physical activity specialists and EFNEP coordinators to ensure content validity.
Cognitive interviews will be used to test the wording, understanding, and the best response categories of those survey questions with EFNEP participants to ensure face validity. Feedbacks from the interviews will be analyzed qualitatively and used to tailor the language to the target audience EFNEP participants.
The consistency of the survey questions over-time will be assessed by test-retest reliability, which is to administer the same survey to the same participants on two separate occasions with one month apart.
The results from test-retest reliability over time will be analyzed through inter-class correlation to examine whether participants answer survey questions the same way on two time points. There are four steps in the survey question development process. Step 1: Draft survey questions will be developed based on the current physical activity guidelines and feedbacks from physical activity experts as well as EFNEP coordinators. Upon completion of the study, a valid and reliable sets of physical activity questions will be developed to better capture EFNEP physical activity educational impact nationally. More specifically,of the study will be explained to each participant and written informed consent will be obtainedAt the first visit, subjects will fill out a demographic questionnaire gender, age, race.
GT3X-BT is a small tri-axial devices 4. It has shown to be a valid and reliable tool in measuring physical activity in adults. Raw data will be collected and will then be reintegrated into a 60s-epoch length for data processing in ActiLife v6. After the accelerometer is successfully initialized, a trained research will demonstrate and help the subject to wear the accelerometer on their right hips attached to an elastic band anterior to the iliac crest.
An instruction sheet and FAQs on the proper usage of accelerometer will also be provided for the subjects for additional guidance. Subjects will be asked to wear the accelerometers during all waking hours for the next seven consecutive days while maintaining their normal activities during the study period.
Because the device is not water proof, the subjects will be advised to remove the accelerometers during water-based activities e.
At the second visit days later , subjects will be asked to return the accelerometers and fill out three questions reporting their physical activity levels in the past week. Their height and weight will be measured again by a trained researcher. Data from the accelerometer will be inspected by the ActiLife software to ensure that there is sufficient data, defined as having a minimum of 5 days with 10 hours valid wear-time per day.
After the data inspection, subjects will participate in a short interview regarding their responses to the three physical activity questions. It is anticipated that this session will take about two hours including the data extraction from the accelerometers and identification of valid days. Subject payment will not be pro-rated for those who withdraw from the study prior to completion. All data collected for this project will be kept confidential. Surveys, interviews, and data collected from the accelerometers will be de-identified using a numeric ID code number.
After de-identification, all the data will be stored in a secure, locked closet at the research office for five years until the study is completed. Raw accelerometer data will be processed using ActiLife v6.
